Omer Bartov

I Know It When I See It».

He is currently Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is considered one of the world's foremost scholars of the Holocaust: his books have been translated into dozens of languages and have won, among other honors, the National Jewish Book Award and the Yad Vashem International Book Prize. In July 2025 he published an article in the New York Times that sparked a heated international debate: «I'm a Genocide Scholar. I Know It When I See It». That article gave rise to the book "Israel: What Went Wrong?" (published in Italian by Laterza as "Nell'abisso. Bartov argues that Israel's actions in Gaza fall within the definition of genocide set out in the 1948 United Nations Convention. But in the book, the author above all raises a series of uncomfortable and crucial questions: how could Zionism, born as a project of emancipation for a persecuted people, turn into a state ideology built on ethno-nationalism and the violent domination of Palestinians? How was it possible to invert the universal lesson of the Holocaust? And why does such a large part of Israeli society support these policies?
